Take Stock in Children

What is Take Stock In Children?

Take Stock in Children is a non-profit program that targets economically disadvantaged children in the community and gives them the promise of a college education and guidance from a caring adult mentor. Children selected receive a 2 + 2 Florida Prepaid college scholarship or a vocational school scholarship. This includes full tuition to attend two years at a community college followed by two years at a university, or full tuition for two years attendance at a vocational or trade school.  Children are selected in the 7th grade by a committee of teachers and community representatives. Once in the program students are required to stay drug and crime free, maintain satisfactory grades and exhibit good behavior in school. Additionally, parents are asked to sign a contract promising to support their child's involvement in the program. All children must have a financial need and a strong commitment to succeed.

Take Stock is a proven program with measurable results. Since 1991, statewide programs together have provided over 11,000 children in Florida with scholarships and mentors. 90% of these students have remained committed to the program. When you participate in Take Stock in Children, you become part of a unique, innovative program that is truly making a difference in the lives of Florida's youth.

Become a Mentor

If you can donate one hour a week, you can change a child's life.  Through weekly personal meetings with a child in the Take Stock program, you will help that child build a foundation of basic values and challenge them to take responsibility for their actions.  You will help them set goals and make sure they understand the importance of staying in school.  By building their self-worth and showing them that someone cares, students will have a better chance of playing a productive role in society.

When you have decided to make the commitment to work with a Take Stock student, you will be interviewed by the Take Stock staff and go through an application and screening process.  After some basic training, you will be matched with a student who will benefit most by your influence.

All mentoring is done on the school campus during school hours on a schedule arranged  between you and the student.  In addition, you will always have the support of someone in our Take Stock office throughout the mentoring process to go to with questions or comments.

Sponsor a child

When you contribute money to Take Stock in Children, every penny of your contribution will stay in this community and fund a Pasco County child's scholarship. In addition, the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, Inc. STARS program matches every dollar donated equally. This brings the current cost of a scholarship down to $5,000.00. Your contribution helps us continue to keep children in school and give them the opportunity to reach their highest potential.

You will make a difference in your community by directly improving a child's life. And of course, all gifts are tax-deductible.

Together we can change the lives of Pasco County's youth…. One community, one school, one family, one child at a time.
